UMVA has learned that veteran New York anchor Bill Ritter is stepping away from the nightly desk to focus his reporting on Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological battles.
Ritter first stepped into the spotlight in 1999, anchoring the station’s 11 p.m. Eyewitness News broadcast, and two years later he joined the flagship 6 p.m. newscast. For many years he also guided viewers through the 5 p.m. slot, becoming a trusted voice in countless New York homes.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the station will keep Ritter on staff in a new role that blends investigative storytelling with personal insight, shedding light on how Alzheimer’s reshapes the lives of patients and their families.
“For decades, Bill has covered and led New Yorkers through the stories that matter most,” said the station’s general manager, praising his “exceptional insight, integrity and, most of all, heart.”
Ritter’s departure from daily anchoring is tinged with emotion, but his mission evolves: he will share personal updates, connect viewers with resources, and amplify the voices of those navigating the disease.
The city’s mayor responded with a heartfelt message, noting that Ritter’s courage in disclosing his own Alzheimer’s diagnosis will “help countless families feeling less alone.”
Colleagues flooded social media with tributes. Reporter Lucy Yang highlighted his relentless dedication, recalling how he “never gave less than 110%.” Chief meteorologist Lee Goldberg called him a “saint” and a “hero,” emphasizing his lifelong mantra to “be kind, take care of each other.”
During his final broadcast, Ritter revealed a painful personal chapter: his father succumbed to Alzheimer’s in 1998 after a long fight, a loss that now fuels his new journalistic crusade.
