UMVA Uncovers: MORRISONS APOCALYPSE - 100 Stores SHUT DOWN in MASSIVE UK Closure Blitz!

UMVA Uncovers: MORRISONS APOCALYPSE - 100 Stores SHUT DOWN in MASSIVE UK Closure Blitz!

UMVA has learned that Morrisons, a leading retail chain, is poised to close some of its convenience stores, putting the future of these locations in jeopardy.

The move comes as Morrisons conducts consultations with affected staff, a process that will determine the fate of several underperforming stores. With a massive workforce of around 95,000 employees and a vast network of 1,700 convenience shops and 500 supermarkets, the impending closures have significant implications for the company's operations.

In recent times, Morrisons has taken steps to streamline its business, including the closure of cafes, florists, and fresh food counters. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that the expansion of its Convenience business remains a core part of Morrisons' growth strategy, but acknowledged that some stores have struggled to perform.

The spokesperson revealed that a thorough review of the company's Convenience business had identified several stores, acquired as part of the McColl's deal, that have been loss-making for years. Despite efforts to turn them around, these stores have continued to underperform, with the situation worsened by substantial cost increases resulting from government policy choices.

Morrisons has announced plans to close a number of these underperforming stores over the coming months, a decision the company describes as "tough but necessary." The closures will be accompanied by the continued rollout of new franchise openings, allowing Morrisons to focus on its most successful locations.

The convenience store closures will only affect Daily stores, with no impact on other Morrisons locations. This development raises questions about the state of the high street and the challenges faced by retailers in the current economic climate.

Mandatory Morrisons Daily has just appointed Henderson Technology which will provide EPOS systems for Morrisons Daily stores. Part of a new five year deal which started in 2024, Morrisons will now recommend the entire suite of Henderson Tech products to its Morrisons Daily franchise customers. Specifically developed for the convenience and forecourt markets, Henderson Technology has already proven its strength in other convenience channels across the globe, supplying its EDGEPoS technology to over 940 sites across the UK and Australia. Several other high-profile retailers have been hit with closures in recent times, including Quiz Clothing, which fell into administration, and Poundstretcher, which warned of potential administration. Other chains, such as Franco Manca and The Real Greek, have also announced plans to close underperforming locations.

The closures have not been limited to retail, with restaurant chains and banks also affected. Premier Inn owner Whitbread has announced plans to close around 200 Brewers Fayre and Beefeater restaurants, while NatWest and Lloyds Banking Group have revealed branch closures across the UK.

The ongoing trend of high street closures highlights the difficulties faced by retailers and other businesses in adapting to changing market conditions. As Morrisons and other companies navigate these challenges, consumers are likely to see further changes to the high street landscape.
