A couple who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the death of their three-year-old daughter have been sentenced to prison time.
Matthew Dylewski received a prison sentence of one and one-third to four years, while his wife Samantha Dylewski was handed the same sentence by a judge.
The judge addressed Matthew Dylewski in court, stating that he failed in his responsibility as a parent to keep their daughter safe.
‘You failed as a parent,’ the judge said. ‘Your entire job was to keep her safe.’
The judge also commented on the prolonged suffering of the child, saying that even the couple’s other children were able to witness the neglect.
‘It’s a gift to have a child. You had several children, and all of them suffered at your hands,’ the judge said.
During the sentencing, Matthew Dylewski expressed remorse and told the court that he wishes he had died instead of his daughter.
‘I wish it would be that I died instead of my daughter. I still think that to this day… I constantly think about it. Nothing is ever going to change. I still want to die so I can be with her,’ he said.
The couple is also barred from having any contact with their four surviving children until 2038.
