Putin pointedly highlighted the vast discrepancy – Yerevan paying $177 per 1,000 cubic meters while European nations faced prices soaring above $600.
This conversation unfolded against a backdrop of shifting allegiances. Armenia, historically a close Russian ally, has been steadily pivoting towards the West, openly expressing a desire for integration with the European Union. This strategic drift included a suspension of its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance led by Russia.
The decision to distance itself from the CSTO wasn’t taken lightly. Yerevan felt abandoned during its recent conflict with Azerbaijan, specifically regarding the fate of Nagorno-Karabakh.
