United Airlines is embarking on a dramatic transformation of the passenger experience, unveiling plans for a new generation of aircraft designed to redefine travel on both coasts and across the Atlantic. This isn’t merely an upgrade; it’s a complete reimagining of what flying can be.
At the heart of this evolution is the “Coastliner,” a custom-configured Airbus A321neo specifically designed for premium transcontinental routes. Imagine a single-aisle jet boasting lie-flat Polaris business-class suites and a dedicated Premium Plus cabin, complete with a convenient walk-up snack bar for all passengers. The aircraft will even sport a distinctive wrap, proudly displaying the “Coastliner” name.
The Coastliner will initially connect Newark Liberty International Airport with both San Francisco and Los Angeles, promising a luxurious experience previously reserved for wider-body aircraft. Passengers will enjoy full Polaris Lounge access and Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, elevating the journey to a new standard of comfort.
But the innovation doesn’t stop there. United is also preparing to welcome the Airbus A321XLR, a long-range narrow-body jet capable of crossing the Atlantic. This aircraft will unlock exciting new destinations in Europe and South America, offering a more efficient and cost-effective way to travel internationally.
Both the Coastliner and the XLR will feature 20 meticulously designed Polaris suites, incorporating semi-translucent barriers to create a sense of spaciousness and privacy. Twelve Premium Plus recliners, arranged in a comfortable two-by-two configuration, will further enhance the travel experience.
These aren’t distant promises; United has ordered 100 of these advanced A321s – 50 Coastliners and 50 XLRs – with deliveries already underway. The arrival of these planes signals a significant shift, replacing older Boeing 757s and bringing a new level of sophistication to domestic and international routes.
The impact extends beyond long-haul flights. United is also innovating within its regional network, introducing a modified “CRJ-450” regional jet. This smaller aircraft will feature a premium-heavy configuration with just 41 seats, including six luxurious first-class recliners and onboard lockers for added convenience.
