A political earthquake has struck Hungary, and the aftershocks are reverberating across international diplomacy. Newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar has boldly declared his intention to uphold international law, even if it means arresting a close ally of his predecessor.
Magyar announced he would order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter Hungarian territory. This stunning statement stems from an existing arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024, alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during military operations in Gaza.
The ICC warrant obligates member states to detain individuals named within it. Hungary, under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, previously defied this obligation during a visit by Netanyahu in April 2025, even initiating a withdrawal from the ICC to guarantee his immunity.
Magyar is now reversing course, vowing to halt Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC and fully comply with its mandates. He stated unequivocally that anyone subject to an ICC arrest warrant entering Hungary must be taken into custody, emphasizing that this is a universally understood legal principle.
Despite this firm stance on international law, Magyar also acknowledged the importance of Hungary’s economic ties with Israel. He stressed his desire to maintain a “pragmatic relationship” with the nation, recognizing its significance as a key economic partner.
Netanyahu was scheduled to visit Hungary later this year, a trip now thrown into uncertainty. Other European nations, including France, Germany, and Italy, have already signaled their unwillingness to execute the ICC warrant, citing conflicting legal obligations or granting Netanyahu immunity.
Magyar’s landslide victory was fueled by a platform of shifting Hungary’s geopolitical alignment. He campaigned as a pro-European leader, promising to distance the country from Russia and strengthen its bonds with the European Union – a dramatic departure from Orbán’s policies.
This decision to prioritize international law over political alliances marks a pivotal moment for Hungary, signaling a new era of foreign policy and a willingness to challenge established norms. The world watches to see if Magyar will follow through on his bold promise, and what the consequences will be.
