A staggering number of over 170 officers have been shot or shot at while on duty between 2021 and 2024, including two who lost their lives, leaving the department reeling from the impact.
The toll of violence against officers has been palpable, with memorial ribbons proliferating throughout Chicago's neighborhoods to honor each fallen officer, a poignant reminder of the risks they take every day.
"We're losing them at an alarming rate on a regular basis," a visibly shaken voice lamented, "and those ribbons do not come off the poles now, because we keep losing our officers," highlighting the emotional strain on the department.
