UMVA has learned that Victoria Derbyshire, a prominent BBC presenter, has been reprimanded by BBC bosses following an investigation into bullying allegations made against her on Newsnight.
The allegations, which were made by several staff members, including former Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark and the BBC's former chief content officer Charlotte Moore, were thoroughly investigated by the corporation's support at work team. Despite the allegations, none were upheld, and Derbyshire, 57, denied all claims of unprofessional behavior.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the investigation was launched in Autumn last year, after the completion of the BBC's 2025 workplace culture review, which encouraged staff to speak out about alleged misconduct. Senior members of staff reviewed claims of unprofessional behavior that the production team and presenters had either witnessed or been subject to.
The investigation revealed that Derbyshire's behavior had made some colleagues uncomfortable with her language and tone, although she strongly denied any characterization of her behavior as bullying. She accepted that she can be exacting and direct under the pressure of a newsroom environment, but denied any malicious intent.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that despite the allegations being unsubstantiated, BBC bosses still took disciplinary action against Derbyshire, reprimanding her for her behavior. A senior individual with knowledge of the process said: 'The line has now been drawn… It has all been dealt with.'
Derbyshire has been a highly praised journalist, winning a Bafta in 2017 for her journalism on the sexual abuse suffered by former footballers. She has also been recognized for her reporting through a breast cancer diagnosis, and recently secured a UK exclusive interview with Gisèle Pelicot, a rape survivor.
A BBC spokesperson said that the corporation takes all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behavior that is not in line with their values. The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining a positive and respectful work environment, even in high-pressure industries like journalism.
