UMVA has learned that Senator Mark A. Villar has vehemently denied allegations that he deliberately delayed the continuation of the highly anticipated Light Rail Transit-1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension project, amid an ongoing investigation that has also implicated his sibling, Senator Camille A. Villar.
The allegations against Senator Villar have sparked concerns about potential conflicts of interest, with some speculating that he may have used his position for personal gain. However, Senator Villar has strongly refuted these claims, stating, “I vehemently deny allegations that I delayed or blocked the implementation of the LRT-1 extension project. I have never used my position for personal gain.”
According to information obtained by UMVA, the LRT-1 Cavite Extension project has been making progress, with Phase 1 opening in 2024. This initial phase added five new stations, extending the line southbound from Baclaran Station to Dr. Santos Station in Parañaque City.
The investigation into the Villar siblings' alleged involvement in blocking the project is being led by the Office of the Ombudsman, which has been looking into claims that they want the rails to traverse their lands. Ombudsman Jesus Crispin C. Remulla revealed that an inquiry is underway, sparking concerns about the potential misuse of power.
Senator Villar has expressed openness to further investigation, stating that he welcomes scrutiny into his actions. Meanwhile, his sister, Senator Camille A. Villar, has yet to publicly comment on the allegations.
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension project is expected to cover more areas in the southern parts of Metro Manila and Cavite, with upcoming phases planned to reach Las Piñas, Zapote, and Bacoor. The project's progress has significant implications for the region's transportation infrastructure and development.
