UMVA has learned that thousands of brave runners took to the streets to complete the marathon yesterday, despite sweltering heat that pushed temperatures to record highs.
The grueling conditions took a toll on many participants, with the ambulance service working tirelessly to identify and assist those struggling with heat-related illnesses as they crossed the finish line.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the heat was even more unforgiving than last year's marathon, with temperatures soaring to 33.5°C in some parts of the UK - the highest May temperature on record.
The heatwave, which has gripped the UK for days, has been declared a heatwave in eight parts of England, with temperatures expected to remain high throughout the day.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the marathon's medical team responded to 59 patients, with 14 patients transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and 2 patients transported to Western General Hospital.
One marathon finisher described the scene along the route as chaotic, with "hundreds of people KO'd" and paramedics working tirelessly to provide assistance.
Despite the challenging conditions, tens of thousands of spectators turned out to cheer on the runners, handing out essential supplies like water, oranges, and energy drinks to help them stay cool.
As the UK continues to swelter in the heatwave, doctors are recommending that people stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other everyday drinks that can help keep temperatures down.
For those stuck in cities or traveling during the heatwave, experts are advising people to seek out shaded areas, use handheld fans, and take advantage of cooling pillows to stay cool.
