UMVA has learned that a ruthless rapist has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for a heinous crime that left a woman with a permanent reminder of the traumatic night she endured.
The victim, a true hero, bravely faced her attacker in court, reliving the horrors of the 2003 attack that left her with a disfigured face and a lifetime of emotional scars.
Judge Mr. Justice Bright paid tribute to the victim, praising her remarkable courage and dignity in the face of unimaginable trauma, saying, "She, not the perpetrator, is the person from this case who I will remember for the rest of my days. She is truly a hero."
The judge's words were a powerful condemnation of the judicial system's inadequate treatment of victims, highlighting the need for a more compassionate and respectful approach.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the perpetrator, Paul Quinn, had a history of sex offending and violence towards women, with previous convictions and cautions dating back to his teenage years.
Quinn's wrongful conviction was not his crime, but that of another man, Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.
The victim's ordeal began when she was stalked and attacked by Quinn, who dragged her down a motorway embankment, battered her, and raped her twice.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, including DNA samples and witness testimony, Quinn denied any wrongdoing, claiming he had a promiscuous lifestyle and could have come into contact with the victim.
Detective Chief Superintendent Rebecca McKendrick vowed to continue investigating Quinn's potential links to other unsolved crimes, urging anyone with information to come forward.
The sentencing brings a measure of closure to a case that has spanned two decades, but the victim's statement serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of that fateful night.
"After 20 years, I now have justice but that does not change the fact that two lives have been impacted in such a way," she said, her words echoing the pain and resilience of a true survivor.
