Allegations of Sexual Assault Emerge in Key Senate Campaign, Raising Concerns Ahead of Critical Filing Deadline

Allegations of Sexual Assault Emerge in Key Senate Campaign, Raising Concerns Ahead of Critical Filing Deadline

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for Maine Senate, is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from the race after a report surfaced of a woman accusing him of rape. The allegations, made by a woman Platner previously dated, have sparked outrage among top Democrats, with several leaders calling for Platner to step down.

According to the report, Platner allegedly forced the woman to have sex with him despite her objections. The woman, who has not been named, claims that Platner was "almost blackout drunk" at the time of the alleged incident. Platner has denied the allegations, calling them "troubling, serious, and false."

The Democratic leadership in Maine has called on Platner to withdraw from the race, stating that "these allegations are incredibly disturbing – violence, abuse, and sexual assault are absolutely unacceptable." The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has also announced that it will not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot.

Several high-profile Democrats, including Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Ruben Gallego, have rescinded their endorsements of Platner. Gallego, who is considered a potential 2028 White House hopeful, stated that the allegations against Platner are "troubling and deeply serious" and that he is rescinding his endorsement.

Platner has been a polarizing figure since launching his campaign, with a history of controversies, including infidelity, alleged physical abuse of an ex-girlfriend, and inflammatory posts on a deleted Reddit account. Despite these controversies, Platner had maintained a lead in several polls, but a recent Fox News poll showed Collins with a small advantage.

Under Maine law, if Platner formally withdraws as the Democratic nominee by July 13, the Maine Democratic Party can replace him on the general election ballot. If he remains the nominee past the deadline, the party generally loses its ability to substitute another candidate through the normal replacement process.

Platner's campaign has pushed back against the allegations, stating that they are "coached and coordinated by out of state establishment operatives" and that they are "no different" from previous false allegations made against Platner. However, the mounting pressure from top Democrats and the seriousness of the allegations may ultimately force Platner to reconsider his campaign.

The outcome of this situation will have significant implications for the Maine Senate race and the Democratic Party's chances of retaining its slim Senate majority in November's midterm elections.

Platner has a history of controversy, including a Nazi-linked tattoo and disparaging comments about the military. Despite this, he had been leading in several polls, but a recent Fox News poll showed Collins with a small advantage.
