The Emirates Stadium pitch offered little give on Sunday, and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres hinted it played a role in the team’s frustrating 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth.
Bournemouth struck first through Junior Kroupi, but Gyokeres swiftly leveled the score with a well-placed penalty. However, the equalizer couldn’t ignite Arsenal’s attack, as Bournemouth dominated the second half.
A composed finish from Alex Scott ultimately sealed the victory for the visitors, leaving Arsenal with a meager three shots on target for the entire match. Gyokeres, reflecting on a late missed opportunity, pointed to the dry playing surface as a contributing factor.
“We had some chances in the end,” Gyokeres shared after the match. “The pitch was a bit dry there to be honest, so that didn’t help. But like I said, we all need to do better and take our chances.”
The defeat marked Arsenal’s third loss in their last four games, a stark contrast to their earlier form. Despite the pain of the loss, Gyokeres emphasized the team’s resilience and quick turnaround with upcoming crucial matches.
“Of course it hurts,” he admitted. “Luckily we have a good game again on Wednesday and another one at the weekend. We have a lot to look forward to.”
Gyokeres acknowledged Bournemouth’s strengths, particularly their dangerous counter-attacks and skillful combinations. He stressed, however, that Arsenal must elevate their own performance to compete at the highest level.
“They’re good on the counter-attacks. They have good players and did some good combinations. But we need to do better,” he stated firmly.
Manager Mikel Arteta echoed the sentiment, expressing his disappointment with the team’s performance, stating they fell far short of their usual standards. He dismissed the idea that a congested schedule was to blame.
Arteta pinpointed inefficiencies in breaking the press and defensive errors as key factors in the defeat. He acknowledged the team’s responsibility to meet the expectations of their supporters and vowed to address the issues.
“Today there were some actions that are very far from the level that we have shown and that shocks the system,” Arteta explained. “We ask a lot from our crowd and today we didn’t respond to those standards.”
Arsenal now face a demanding schedule, with a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP followed by a pivotal Premier League clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
