AIRLINE FEES ARE RIPPING YOU OFF! This Card FIGHTS Back.

AIRLINE FEES ARE RIPPING YOU OFF! This Card FIGHTS Back.

A quiet shift is happening in the skies, one that’s hitting travelers directly in their wallets. Airlines, grappling with rising fuel costs, are quietly increasing checked bag fees. Suddenly, a seemingly simple round-trip can come with an unexpected $100 baggage bill – per person.

For those of us who hunt for the lowest fares, often opting for basic economy, these fees can erase any savings. It’s a frustrating reality, especially when you’re trying to maximize travel rewards. The desire to find a sweet spot – affordable travel *and* valuable perks – feels increasingly out of reach.

But there’s a strategy that can reclaim some control. Airline-branded credit cards, often with surprisingly low annual fees, can offer a powerful benefit: free checked bags. If you fly with a particular airline even a couple of times a year, the savings can quickly outweigh the card’s cost.

Let’s look at American Airlines. Standard fares currently face $50 for the first bag and $60 for the second, while basic economy adds another $5-$10 to each. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® offers a first free checked bag for you and up to four companions on domestic flights, potentially saving a significant amount on a family trip.

United Airlines presents a similar opportunity. Their bag fees are $50 and $60 respectively, and the United℠ Explorer Card waives baggage fees for the cardholder and one companion. This can be a game-changer for frequent flyers, especially considering the card also offers comparable mileage earning rates on basic economy fares.

Delta Air Lines is also in the mix. With fees at $45 and $55, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card provides a free checked bag for you and up to eight travel companions. Beyond the bag benefit, cardholders also enjoy perks like 15% off award flights and statement credits for Delta hotel stays.

Even Southwest, once known for its generous baggage allowance, now charges $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, with its $99 annual fee, can easily pay for itself if you check a bag on just a couple of round-trip flights, and now includes priority seat selection.

Alaska Airlines offers another compelling option. The Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® credit card, at $95 annually, provides a free checked bag for the cardholder and up to six companions. It also boosts earning potential on Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines flights, offering 3 points per $1 spent.

The reality is, airlines aren’t likely to reverse course on these fees. This has become the new normal for travel. Investing in the right airline credit card isn’t just about saving money on baggage; it’s about regaining a little control over your travel expenses and maximizing the value of every journey.

Many of us carry multiple airline cards, not for daily use, but for those moments when the perks – like a free checked bag for a partner – make all the difference. It’s a strategic approach to navigating the evolving landscape of airline fees and ensuring a smoother, more affordable travel experience.
