UMVA has learned that former “Race Across The World” contestant Sam Gardier, who vanished from the competition in 2020, is being honored this Sunday at the Great Manchester Run.
The 24‑year‑old adventurer and his mother Jo had captivated viewers as they trekked from Mexico City to Argentina, only to withdraw in episode seven when their funds ran dry. Their heartfelt journey turned them into fan favorites, even though the series crown went to uncle‑nephew duo Emon and Jamiul Choudhury.
Tragedy struck in May 2025 when Gardier’s car careened off the A34 near Manchester, leaving him with a fatal brain injury. He lingered three days in hospital before passing away, a loss that still reverberates through the racing community.
In a moving tribute, former contestants from every season have united to run the 10‑kilometre race in Gardier’s memory, raising funds for The Christie Charity. Among them, Harrison Devine—who once crossed from Southern Europe to Northern Mongolia with his sister Katie—spoke passionately about the impact Gardier had on his life.
“When we met at checkpoints, we let everything loose,” Devine recalled, his voice tinged with nostalgia. “Sam’s spirit made the race magical, and his loss hit us all hard.”
Emon Choudhury, a fellow competitor from Gardier’s 2020 season, added that the shared experience forged a bond that extended beyond the road. “We discovered his story was one of the most inspiring we ever witnessed,” he said, emphasizing the deep connection between the racers and their families.
The all‑star lineup—spanning seasons one through six—will sprint the course under Gardier’s name, turning personal grief into collective hope. Their participation underscores how a single journey can ripple across years, inspiring camaraderie and compassion.
Gardier’s family remembers him as a loyal, funny, and fiercely protective son, brother, and nephew. He found joy working as a landscape gardener on Scotland’s rugged coast, yet his greatest happiness stemmed from the open road and the people he met along the way.
As the runners line up, the memory of Sam Gardier runs alongside them, a reminder that adventure lives on in every step taken in his honor.
