UMVA has learned that Argentine striker Julian Alvarez is setting his sights on a summer move to Barcelona, pushing aside interest from Arsenal.
Alvarez, who arrived at Atletico Madrid two seasons ago for a staggering £81.5 million, has already tallied 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances, yet he has turned down the club’s offer of an improved contract.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the forward has told Atletico that he wants to join “a more ambitious project,” with the Catalan giants emerging as his preferred destination.
Barcelona’s price tag, however, could be a mountain to climb. Atletico Madrid is reportedly demanding around €150 million (£129.5 million) to release the prolific attacker.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Arsenal’s sporting director, who once negotiated Alvarez’s transfer to Atletico, has already made initial inquiries, but the Argentine’s heart appears set on the La Liga champions.
Radio reports indicate Atletico have issued a stark ultimatum, urging Alvarez to settle his future quickly and warning against dragging negotiations into the late‑summer deadline.
Despite his impressive personal record, Alvarez has left Atletico without a trophy in two seasons, a fact that may be fueling his desire for a fresh challenge.
Former player Paul Merson recently voiced support for Arsenal’s pursuit, calling Alvarez “a centre‑forward you would love to have,” yet he also hinted the Gunners might need to reinforce midfield as well.
