Renowned musicians die in Bahamas plane crash; aviation regulator suspends flights

A devastating double-aviation crisis in the Bahamas has prompted the government to suspend flight operations for a local airline and launch a federal safety probe. A Cessna 402 aircraft crashed into bushes prior to landing in North Andros, resulting in multiple fatalities. The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. local time on Friday, after the plane departed Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau bound for San Andros Airport. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority reported that the plane "encountered difficulties" before crashing.

First responders, including the Royal Bahamas Police Force and emergency medical personnel, rushed to the scene to provide assistance. The Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers union reported that 10 people died in the crash, including prominent members of a local band and a DJ. The union stated that the victims' artistry "touched so many lives and helped to enrich the cultural fabric of The Bahamas." The identities of those killed in the crash have not yet been released, as officials are still establishing the facts of the flight manifest.

Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, stating that he and his wife are "praying for the families who are now facing unbearable grief." He also offered prayers for the sole survivor, whose recovery and care will remain in their thoughts. The prime minister's statement came as the country grapples with the aftermath of the tragic crash.

Just hours before the fatal crash in North Andros, a Flamingo Air flight was forced to turn back to Nassau due to a concern. After the aircraft landed and passengers safely deplaned, the plane caught fire on the runway. Following the two back-to-back safety incidents, the Civil Aviation Authority Bahamas temporarily suspended Flamingo Air's Air Operator Certificate as a precautionary safety measure.

Investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority and inspectors from the Civil Aviation Authority Bahamas are working to determine the cause of the Cessna 402 tragedy. The suspension of Flamingo Air's operations is intended to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, and should not be treated as an adverse compliance action against the airline. The investigation into the two incidents is ongoing, with officials seeking to establish the facts and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
