UMVA has learned that London is bracing itself for a crippling 24-hour wave of Tube strikes, with commuters facing a nightmare of travel disruptions.
The city's transport network has been dealt a double blow, as a signal meltdown on the Elizabeth line has brought services to a grinding halt in west London, with severe delays reported between Paddington and Heathrow Airport terminals, and Reading.
The Elizabeth line, touted as a lifeline for commuters during the strike, has been severely impacted, with only minor delays reported between Paddington and Abbey Wood. The rest of the London Underground lines are also severely disrupted, with very few services running before 6:30am and few expected after 9pm.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the strike, which kicked off just after midnight, is expected to run through to 11:59pm tonight, bringing misery to thousands of commuters. The RMT union and TfL failed to reach an agreement during lengthy last-minute talks, with the union expressing concerns about the impact of longer working hours on its drivers.
TfL had aimed to run at least half of Tube services, but the fact that the strikes are going ahead has been described as 'bitterly disappointing'. The Elizabeth Line, London Overground lines, DLR, and Tram are running as normal, but are expected to be extremely busy, as are bus routes and roads.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that a second day of strikes is scheduled for Thursday, adding to the travel chaos. The disruptions come after two days of walk-outs were called off at the eleventh hour last month.
The news will be a devastating blow to Londoners, who are already facing a summer of travel disruption. With the city's transport network in crisis, commuters are bracing themselves for a long and difficult day.
