Once a dazzling figure of the glam rock era, Paul Gadd, known to millions as Gary Glitter, is now facing a stark decline behind bars. At 81 years old, reports indicate his health is rapidly deteriorating within the confines of HMP Channings Wood in Devon.
Gadd’s fall from grace began in 1999 with a conviction for possessing child pornography, a four-month sentence that marked the start of a devastating series of legal battles. Deported from Cambodia following child abuse allegations, he was later imprisoned for two and a half years in 2006 for sexually abusing two young girls.
The most severe reckoning came in 2015, when a 16-year sentence was imposed for the sexual assault of three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. That sentence, originally set for release in 2031, now seems increasingly likely to be served in full.
A recent parole bid was denied, and sources reveal Gadd now spends up to 23 hours a day isolated in his cell. His physical state has dramatically worsened; he is reportedly deaf, struggles with mobility, and often relies on a wheelchair.
Those familiar with his current condition describe a man barely recognizable from his former flamboyant self, his body seemingly “giving up.” The weight of his past, and a recent return to court, is said to be deeply troubling him.
Gadd’s financial ruin is another layer to his downfall. He declared bankruptcy last year, unable to pay over £500,000 in damages to one of his victims, a consequence that underscores the lasting impact of his crimes.
Within the prison walls, he is largely ostracized by other inmates and housed in a Vulnerable Prisoner Unit for his own protection. Staff are acutely aware of his hearing impairment and limited physical capabilities.
A brief period of release in 2023 was cut short when authorities discovered he had violated his license conditions, allegedly attempting to access the dark web and view illicit images. This led to his swift return to custody.
