After evading capture for 10 days, a man wanted for two counts of first-degree murder in the slaying of his parents has finally been taken into custody.
Toronto Police arrested Jordan Sangwin, 46, in Mimico Creek Park on Saturday evening without incident. The arrest came after a tip from the public, who reported a makeshift shelter in the park near Lake Shore Blvd. and Legion Rd.
Sangwin was arrested by Toronto Police officers on behalf of Peel Regional Police, who had warned the public that he was considered armed and dangerous.
He was caught almost 10 days to the hour after his parents, Carol and Garwood (Gary), 70, were found slain by blunt-force trauma at about 7 p.m. on June 18 on Briarwood Ave. in Port Credit.
The public played a significant role in the arrest, with 25 tips received by Peel Police in the 10 days following the murders. During a news conference, Peel's homicide unit commander thanked the public for their help, saying they "allowed us into your homes to review video."
The slain couple, popular in Mississauga, was known for their kindness and community involvement. Gary was a well-respected carpenter in Port Credit, while Carol was famous for her gardening and her love for her family.
Sangwin had no previous criminal record, but now faces charges of first-degree murder, which have not been tested in court. His arrest was the culmination of several sightings in the area, including one episode where he was able to elude police by jumping into backyards.
Police released a photograph of Sangwin on June 21, showing him to be in good health and showing little distress. However, sources said he was showing signs of fatigue after 10 days on the run.
Toronto Police found Sangwin in Mimico Creek Park after a nearby resident alerted them to a small encampment along the creek. It is believed that the accused had fled the murder scene on foot and walked along the shores of Lake Ontario before making his way to the park.
