The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is aiming to unseat another House Democrat, as the divide between the establishment and the far-left continues to fuel chaos within the party.
The national organization has endorsed Donavan McKinney, a Michigan state lawmaker, over Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich. Thanedar has made headlines for his push to impeach President Donald Trump and his threats to several Cabinet officials, including Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Thanedar has also pushed legislation to pave the way for a national reparations system to give payments to Black Americans, but he's still fielding attacks from fellow members of the far left, with several self-proclaimed democratic socialists also endorsing McKinney.
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib are among the sitting members of Congress backing McKinney over Thanedar. Thanedar, who is running for a third term representing his deep-blue Detroit-area district, renounced his own DSA membership in October 2023 over fellow socialists' stances on the Oct. 7 attack in Israel.
McKinney was already endorsed by the Detroit-area DSA, and his endorsement by the national party marks a significant development in the ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party.
Several sitting House Democrats have already fallen victim to the far-left wave sweeping the country, particularly in the party's strongholds. Rep. Dan Goldman and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat lost their respective primary races to challengers from the left flank.
Republicans have seized on these victories as evidence that Democrats are shifting further left and away from where most Americans are politically. It's prompted more moderate Democrats to sound the alarm ahead of November's midterms.
Rep. Henry Cuellar, one of the most vulnerable Democrats of this election cycle, has expressed his rejection of the DSA's platform, calling it "radical." The ongoing controversy within the Democratic Party is set to continue in the lead-up to the midterms.
