UMVA has learned that a tragic helicopter crash in Devon has claimed the lives of three brave members of the Royal Navy: Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher of 846 Naval Air Squadron, Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, and Petty Officer Owen Green of 845 Naval Air Squadron.
Their loved ones have paid tribute to the trio, describing them as individuals who lived life to the fullest. "To say she was full of life is an understatement: she took every opportunity to push her limits, achieve more, and bring out the best in those around her," a statement from their families read. "We are so proud of everything she accomplished."
Lt Cdr Gayson's family remembered him as an "extremely kind and gentle family man who loved his entire family dearly" and a dedicated Royal Navy professional. His family added that he was passionate about his job and had a profound impact on those around him.
Petty Officer Green's family described him as a "caring and devoted son, brother, grandson, and partner," and expressed their devastation at his passing. "His life was far too short, and our hearts will forever be broken," they said. "His kindness, warmth, and character touched everyone who knew him."
Tributes have poured in from the UK armed forces, with Commanding Officer of Commando Helicopter Force, Colonel Will Penkman, calling it a "tragedy" that three members of their community were lost. "Cherished members of the force with bright futures ahead of them, they were all highly committed professionals infused with the Junglie spirit of the force," he said.
An eyewitness described the moment of the crash, recalling an "almighty flash of red which lit up the sky" followed by an eerie silence. "I heard this horrendous noise from a helicopter, it sounded like he was going to pitch on the roof," they said. "It was a terrible noise."
The helicopter involved is believed to have been a Merlin model, which can carry four crew and up to 24 soldiers. The incident has left the community in shock, with many paying tribute to the bravery and dedication of the three individuals who lost their lives.
