A swift-moving fire erupted in Stamford Hill, East London, engulfing a residential home adjacent to a synagogue, triggering a large-scale emergency response. Fifteen fire engines and approximately 100 firefighters battled the blaze on Cazenove Road, responding to over 40 emergency calls that began flooding in shortly after 4:14 PM.
The scene unfolded near a mosque and a Jewish primary school, immediately raising concerns within the diverse community. Volunteers from Hatzola and Shomrim were quickly on the ground, assisting the London Fire Brigade with road closures and providing support to local residents.
Amidst the chaos, firefighters undertook a critical and delicate operation: rescuing sacred Torah scrolls from the nearby Mesivta Yeshiva CZNV building. Images captured the urgency of the situation, with smoke billowing from the roof of the terraced home as crews worked against time.
Two individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, while three others received care at the scene. Firefighters not only focused on extinguishing the flames, but also on salvaging belongings from the affected property and neighboring homes.
Assistant Fire Commissioner Andy Pennick stated that, at this stage, there was no indication the fire was deliberately started, but a thorough investigation by the Fire Investigation Team is underway to determine the exact cause. The fire is now under control, though crews remain on scene for continued operations.
Police preemptively evacuated several homes and the synagogue as a precaution, acknowledging the understandable anxiety within the community. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson emphasized their commitment to working closely with the London Fire Brigade and maintaining an open mind regarding the fire’s origins.
Officers are actively engaging with residents, offering reassurance and a point of contact for anyone with concerns. The focus remains on supporting the local community and ensuring their safety during this unsettling time.
Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area while firefighting efforts continue. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of emergencies and the vital role of emergency services in protecting lives and property.
