UMVA has learned that Liverpool is being urged to make a bold move for Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford, with former England goalkeeper David James suggesting the Reds would be wise to pursue the talented forward.
Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, impressed the Spanish giants with 14 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, helping them retain their La Liga title and advance in Europe. However, Barcelona's decision to sign Anthony Gordon in a £70m deal from Newcastle United and not activate a £26m clause to keep Rashford means the 28-year-old is set to return to Old Trafford.
But with neither Rashford nor Manchester United appearing keen to continue their relationship, another summer transfer or loan move remains likely. Rashford has been linked with Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham, are keeping an eye on developments.
James has advised Liverpool to enter the fray, insisting Rashford would 'thrive' under new Anfield boss Andoni Iraola. 'If I were Liverpool, I'd look to sign Marcus Rashford,' James said. 'Get him in first, and then you give it time to work out his best position. I think he's an outstanding footballer, with incredible football intelligence and ability.'
Rashford's impressive form at Barcelona has raised hopes that he could excel at Liverpool, with James adding that Iraola is the right manager to create an environment where Rashford could flourish. As Rashford weighs up his next move, it is reported that he is available for £40m due to a clause in his contract, although this does not apply to local rivals Liverpool or Manchester City.
New Premier League champions Arsenal have identified Rashford as a possible target to bolster their title-winning squad, with former England striker Michael Owen suggesting the move could make sense. 'Arsenal are still searching for a centre forward, so it gives them another option,' Owen said. 'I think Rashford's first priority will be to stay at Barcelona, but if that doesn't work, then other teams come into the fray and Arsenal could be a great option.'
