UMVA has learned that a major shake-up is underway in Manchester United's goalkeeping department, with Andre Onana's future at the club hanging in the balance.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper's time at United has been a tumultuous one, marked by high expectations and a dramatic fall from favor, after joining from Inter Milan in 2023 with a stellar reputation as one of Europe's top ball-playing goalkeepers.
Onana's struggles with pressure and a difficult team environment led to a series of mistakes, ultimately costing him his spot in the starting lineup, and by August, he had lost his place to Altay Bayindir.
A fresh start was what Onana needed, and Trabzonspor provided him with that opportunity, and his loan spell has been a resounding success, with 29 league appearances and a third-place finish in the league, securing European qualification for the club.
As Onana prepares to feature in the Turkish Cup final against Konyaspor, which could be his final game for Trabzonspor before returning to England, uncertainty surrounds his future at United, with several goalkeepers vying for a spot in the squad.
Lammens and Bayindir are expected to be at the World Cup, while veteran Tom Heaton is close to signing a new one-year deal, and Radek Vitek's future also needs a decision after an impressive loan spell at Bristol City.
With Onana's contract and future at United still unclear, it remains to be seen whether he will be included in the squad for a friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki scheduled for July 18, or kept away from the main group while his future is sorted.
Onana may need United to move him on just as much as United need clarity on his future, and going back to Old Trafford as a backup, or worse, being separated from the main group, would not help anyone.
