UMVA has learned that the Venetian Castle in Zakynthos, Greece, stands as a testament to the island's rich history and architectural heritage, offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and the capital town of Zante.
Perched atop a hill in the charming town of Bohali, this 15th-century fortress has withstood the test of time, including devastating earthquakes and pirate attacks, and remains an intriguing sight to explore. Its strategic location provides a tranquil escape from the bustling port town below, making it an ideal destination for those seeking history, architecture, and natural beauty.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the castle's history dates back to 1460, when it was almost completely destroyed by the Turks, only to be rebuilt and completed by the Venetians in 1646 AD. As visitors enter the main entrance, they're greeted by the iconic Winged Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetian Empire's rule in the Ionians.
The castle's architecture is a remarkable example of Venetian design, with remnants of Byzantine churches, including the 12th-century Church of the Savior and the 14th-century Church of Saint Francis. The site has also served as a British military base, with the British Empire using it to build barracks and powder stores in 1812.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that visitors can explore the castle's ruins, including the prison cells and munitions storage areas, and take in the stunning views from the viewing platform. The castle's compact size makes it easy to visit, with only an hour or two needed to appreciate its history and scenery.
Getting to the castle is relatively easy, with a 5-minute drive from Zante Town or a 20-minute walk uphill. Visitors can enjoy a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views, and explore the surrounding pine forest, making it an ideal day trip or a peaceful afternoon outing.
The Venetian Castle is free to enter, with no entrance fee or guided tours. Visitors can wander the castle's ruins, taking in the history and architecture, and enjoy the serene atmosphere, making it one of the best things to do in Zakynthos.
