Uruguay's World Cup Exit Leaves Marcelo Bielsa Fuming
Marcelo Bielsa's emotions got the better of him during Uruguay's World Cup exit, as he let his frustration show on the touchline and in a post-match press conference.
Bielsa's outburst was sparked by a late red card for forward Agustin Canobbio, who was given his marching orders for a wild tackle on Pau Cubarsi. Canobbio's reaction to the red card only added to the drama, as he raised his hands to the referee's chest and continued to remonstrate after full-time.
Speaking later in his press conference, Bielsa took the blame for his side's disastrous World Cup exit, stating that he had failed to achieve results during his three-year tenure.
'What do I leave for Uruguayan football? Nothing,' Bielsa said. 'Because any contribution that a coach might make to football in a country after three years of work never truly takes hold if results aren't achieved.'
Bielsa continued to take the blame, acknowledging that his team's poor performance was a result of his management.
'If you want an explanation, which I think is not what you want, I can tell you that we deserved to win seven points and we only got two. This is the result of my management,' he said.
Uruguay's opponents, Spain, topped Group H and will play Austria or Algeria in their round-of-32 clash.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, made history by becoming the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage, drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia and setting up a dream match-up against defending champions Argentina in the round of 32.
