UMVA has learned that CHIN Radio/TV president Lenny Lombardi has plenty to celebrate, despite Italy's absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Toronto, Vancouver, the U.S., and Mexico.
The milestone worth noting is the 60th anniversary of CHIN, which will be a highlight of the CHIN Picnic this weekend as part of the Taste of Little Italy festival on College St. The celebration will include a special ceremony on Saturday at 4 p.m., complete with a cake-cutting ceremony, guest speakers, and the release of 60 balloons.
Founded in 1966, CHIN was one of the first broadcasters dedicated to serving immigrant communities in their own languages. Today, it broadcasts in more than 50 languages each week across Toronto and Ottawa, playing a significant role in promoting multiculturalism and diversity in Canada.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Lenny Lombardi believes CHIN Radio played a crucial role in shaping Toronto's cultural identity, fostering a sense of inclusion and diversity that the city is known for today. He credits his father's vision and legacy for CHIN's success, which has grown from two radio stations to five.
CHIN's history is also marked by memorable events, such as the once-popular CHIN bikini contest, which was born out of a Miss CHIN Picnic and eventually became a famous, albeit infamous, tradition in Toronto. Lombardi recalls the contest as a product of its time, which was eventually phased out as societal norms evolved.
As the Taste of Little Italy and CHIN Picnic approach, College St. is expected to be overwhelmed by soccer fans cheering on their favorite teams. Lombardi predicts a lively atmosphere, with TV monitors and big screens set up in cafes and bars, making it a hub for soccer enthusiasts to gather and experience the festival.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Lenny Lombardi will be rooting for Canada in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Argentina and Portugal as his secondary choices. The event will undoubtedly bring the community together, celebrating their love for soccer and multiculturalism.
