The pre-dawn darkness over Boulder, Colorado, shattered Wednesday morning with an unbelievable act: a recently released jail inmate commandeered a fire truck. Just moments after being freed, Richmond Takashi Johnson, 33, allegedly climbed into the cab of the emergency vehicle and sped away, initiating a frantic chase that would span counties.
Police initially apprehended Johnson around midnight after reports surfaced of a man attempting to break into cars and homes. Released roughly three and a half hours later, as dictated by state law, he found an unexpected opportunity as fire crews responded to a medical call at the jail.
While firefighters attended to a patient inside the booking lobby, Johnson allegedly slipped into the driver’s seat of Engine 143 and drove off, covering approximately a mile before being spotted by deputies and city police. The brazen theft immediately escalated into a high-stakes pursuit.
Johnson refused to yield, leading officers eastward towards a major interstate highway, ten miles distant. Law enforcement from Longmont joined the chase, strategically deploying tire-deflation devices in a desperate attempt to halt the runaway fire truck.
The tactic proved successful, though not without further drama. After its tires were punctured, the massive vehicle lost control, forcing Johnson to abandon it and flee on foot. A swift response from Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies and Longmont Police officers quickly brought the pursuit to an end.
“He then jumped out of Engine 143 and ran away,” a police statement confirmed, “Within minutes he was arrested.” Thankfully, the incident concluded without any serious injuries to first responders or the public, though one deputy sustained a minor injury during the foot chase.
The stolen fire truck, a state-of-the-art electric RTX engine, suffered significant damage and is currently undergoing assessment. Two vehicles belonging to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office sustained major damage, with a third receiving minor repairs.
