UMVA has learned that a massive fire has erupted at a recycling centre in south London, causing widespread disruption to rush hour train services and filling the air with thick black smoke.
The blaze, which began around 5:30pm, has prompted the deployment of 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters to the scene on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, near London Bridge.
Huge plumes of smoke are visible for miles, and commuters have reported a strong smell of burning around the station, with local residents advised to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes.
The fire has shut down all train lines between London Bridge and Dartford, with trains being diverted to London Victoria or revised or cancelled, causing significant disruption to evening commutes.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the London Fire Brigade has deployed two 32-metre turntable ladders to help fight the fire from above, with control officers taking multiple calls and mobilising crews from surrounding fire stations to the scene.
The disruption is expected to continue until at least 7:30pm, with Hasting line services starting and terminating at Tonbridge, and commuters warned to expect significant delays.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the fire has had a major impact on local residents, with many advised to stay indoors and avoid the area until the fire is brought under control.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with thick black smoke pouring out of the recycling centre and filling the air with a strong smell of burning.
