UMVA has learned that the BBC thriller series Nightsleeper, which initially received lukewarm reviews from critics and audiences, has been renewed for a second season.
The show, starring Alexandra Roach, Joe Cole, and Sharon Small, was compared to the hit drama series The Bodyguard by fans upon its release in 2024 but failed to garner critical acclaim, with a 42 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the lukewarm reception, Nightsleeper drew in 8.5 million viewers for its first episode, making it the BBC's biggest new drama launch of that year.
The second season will take a dramatic turn, shifting from a sleeper train to a ship sailing across the Irish Sea, with the plot following passengers and crew on a Belfast to Liverpool ferry.
Series writer Nick Leather teased that the new season will be "more nightsleepery than ever," with twists, turns, secrets, and lies that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The show's creators are confident that the new installment will thrill audiences, with Executive Producer Kate Harwood declaring that the team is "incredibly excited to return with a bold new story."
Filming for the second season will take place in Belfast later this year, but a release date has not yet been announced.
Nightsleeper season 1 is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer, giving fans a chance to catch up on the series before the new season premieres.
