Woman goes viral after accidentally joining gay run club gayns – and it’s iconic

A TikTok user by the name of Ruwi has gone viral for joining accidentally joining a gay run club for a half-marathon training session, saying the experience was ‘out of my comfort zone’, but that the group were ‘so welcoming’.

The run club is part ofgayns(a play on words from the word ‘gains’, which means muscle growth), an events company with the mission of improving gay and queer people’s health, fitness and connection to community.

The ‘gayns presents: roadrunner’ is a free, weekly run club forqueer peopleheld on Saturday mornings, but the company also hosts different, one-off events, such as marathon training, or half marathon runs.

And TikTok user Ruwi, by the handle of @mo0nriverandme0, is currently going viral with a video of her accidentally joining one of those sessions without realising they’re primarily geared towards LGBTQ+ folk.

In the video, which has been viewed 1.7 million times at time of writing, Ruwi joins a group of (dare we say) strapping young men all limbering up for a half-marathontraining session ahead of London’s The Big Half (7 September).

I acc kept looking for my group until I clocked that I signed up for something that I didn’t know about, they were so lovely and welcoming tho I just didn’t really fit in clearly😭😭

In the video, Ruwi spoke to the camera, saying: “Oh my god, I literally just found out that the event is for gay men… they’re right there.”

The video cuts to a warm-up section of the gayns run, showing a lot of topless men stretching. The group also take a photo before they start running, with Ruwi praising the “professional” runners and tapping out of the training session, letting the group run on.

“Disclaimer, check the details before signing up for something,” she later tells the camera. “That was actually… they were so nice, but [it was] so uncomfortable.”

“I acc kept looking for my group until I clocked that I signed up for something that I didn’t know about, they were so lovely and welcoming tho I just didn’t really fit in clearly,” she wrote as the post’s caption, with text overlay reading: “The lore behind me signing up for a gay men marathon club accidentally.”

Several runners from the gayns class have commented on the TikTok, praising Ruwi for joining in – and it’s all love here.

“We were wondering what happen [sic] to you!” wrote an account called Running Yves, referencing Ruwi dropping out of the run. “Glad you joined us. Sorry if it was uncomfortable.”

Ruwi replied: “It was my first time running a marathon so it was all out of my comfort zone… but you guys didn’t make me uncomfortable at all infact u were so welcoming so thank you.”

Yves added: “On Saturdays we have 7k route and the group is more diverse”.

In an expired story from the @getgayns account, Ruwi can be seen posing at the side of the group picture (like an icon).

Several comments have shared humour at the mixup; “Sorry but I have been laughing at this for the past 20 minutes,” one wrote.

“Love for still coming and running though,” another one of the runners commented above a picture of the group.

“And you still ran with them teaaaaaa,” joked another.

“Y’all were so welcoming so ty for that,” Ruwi commented.
