EDINBURGH residents have reported feeling a small shakes and a mild tremor ripple through the city yesterday afternoon after an earthquake inPerthshire.
The quake was centred aroundGlen Lyon, a large glen near Aberfeldy in the Perth and Kinross area of Scotland, but Edinburgh residents reported perceptible tremors in the Scottish capital, nearly 100 miles away from the epicentre.
This tremor came less than 12 hours after a similar magnitude earthquake hit the exact same place in the morning, at around 7:30am.
The earthquake was registered by theBritish Geological Survey (BGS)as having a magnitude of 3.7 on theRichter scale, slightly higher than the previous earthquake, which struck early in the morning.

The BGS first reported an earthquake with a magnitude of around 3.6 in Glen Lyon at approximately 7:25am yesterday.
This was immediately followed by a series of minor tremors and aftershocks.
These aftershocks continued at a low level until around 4:30pm, when a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was followed by a larger 3.7 magnitude quake at around 5:06pm.
An earthquake of this magnitude represents a significant event, relative to the scale seismic activity in Scotland – a country not known for earthquakes.
If reports about its magnitude are accurate, this could be the largest earthquake to be recorded in Scotland since a 3.8 magnitude earthquakehit the western Scottish Highlands in 2017.
BGS reported that the earthquake had been felt in Aberfeldy, Killin, Pitlochry, Tyndrum and several other places within 60km of the quake’s epicentre.
One report described the quake as “like an underground subway went under my house”.
The earthquake may have been felt as far away as Edinburgh, however – upwards of 100km away from the epicentre.
This is according to a forum dedicated to discussion of local news, where people reported feeling tremors in the nation’s capital.
One user asked: “I’d read about the earthquake in Perth and Kinross earlier this morning but didn’t feel anything here in Edinburgh (EH3) at the time.
“I just felt a small shake earlier though. At first I thought it was the construction work nearby, but they’d already packed up for the day. Curious if anyone else noticed it?”
Another replied: “Odd you should mention because I did feel something earlier and paused but I assumed it couldn’t be that.”
While a third said: “Yep in EH6. I wonder how many there’ll be.”
According to data gathered by BGS, the tremor occurred 3km underground, and all of the earthquakes were centred on the same area of Perthshire, near Aberfeldy.
The earthquake yesterday afternoon was followed by a large aftershock measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale.
