Busy Edinburgh street reopened following four-vehicle pile-up involving two police cars

EDINBURGH’S busyBroughtonStreet has been reopened after a crash involving two police cars, a van, and a car forced its closure early this morning.


Emergency services rushed to the scene around 6am, where three casualties were treated for injuries. 


Broughton Street has been fully closed off from York Place near the top ofLeith Walkdown to East London Street. 


Pedestrians and motorists had been advised by police to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Lothian Buses announced the diversion of the number 8 bus route, which runs through Broughton Street, via Elm Row, Annandale Street and East London Street in both directions until further notice. 


Images of the crash show two marked Police Scotland vehicles heavily damaged, with one being hoisted onto the back of a flatbed lorry. 


It is unknown at this time what exactly caused the crash, but police say that enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. 


There have been no updates on when the road, and the junctions serving it, may be reopened. 


In a statement today (FRI), Police Scotland said: “There are several road closures in place at Broughton Street in Edinburgh following a crash involving two police marked vehicles, a van and a car. 


“We received a report at 6am and emergency services are in attendance. Three people are being treated at the scene. 


“The closures are in place from East London Street, Albany Street, Forth Street and York place. 


“Please avoid the area and use an alternative route.” 


Several police cars, ambulances, and the fire brigade were all spotted on the scene. 


Before 10am today, however, the road was reopened. 


In a statement, Police Scotland provided an update: 


“Broughton Street in Edinburgh has now fully re-opened following a crash involving two police marked vehicles, a van and a car, which was reported around 6am on Friday, 24 October, 2025. 


“Emergency services attended, and three officers were taken to hospital for assessment, but their injuries are not believed to be serious. 


“Enquiries into the crash are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
