It’s the new political thriller that’s got everyone talking, but A House of Dynamite’s ending has left some viewers unfulfilled.
Following its premiere atVeniceFilm Festival last month, the Kathryn Bigelow-directed apocalyptic flick landed onNetflixyesterday.
Early reviews tipped A House of Dynamite as one of the most gripping films of the year, withMetro‘s Film Expert Tori Brazier even declaring it‘the best and most thought-provoking movie of 2025’.
Boastingan impressive ensemble castincludingIdris Elbaas the president andRebecca Fergusonas aWhite HouseSituation Room official, it’s perhaps no surprise that the hype was strong for this one.

Similarly, on paper, the plot has all the ingredients of heart-pounding cinema, as a race against time ensues to determine who is behind a single, unattributed missile launched at theUnited States.
Alas, after excitedly sitting down to watch the streaming platform’s latest addition, audiences took tosocial mediato blast the ‘terrible’ conclusion.
@Makaalani wrote on X: ‘Amazing cast, great plot, terrible ending.’
‘A House of Dynamite had so much potential, and it did a great job of building up the suspense. But by the end of the movie, it got old and stale. To top it off, it added insult to injury with an ending that insulted the viewer. I’m highly disappointed’, raged@Travel_w_Brian.
‘WTF Netflix!!! What the hell was THAT ending? Movie had such amazing buildup only to have NO ENDING…..??? STUPID!!’, added a livid @Vyyyper.
@816kindafitdad also stated it was a ‘waste of two hours’, while @SuperDanversEsq said the ending was not only ‘ridiculous’ but ‘unimaginative’.
‘What was Kathryn Bigelow thinking?!’, they asked, baffled.
So, what is it exactly that’s got everyone so riled up about this so-called disappointing ending?
Well, fans had hoped that the root of the impending nuclear threat would be exposed. Instead, they are left hanging, and the decision taken by the president is left deliberately equivocal.
Throughout the film’s runtime, audiences watch asgovernmentofficials scramble to tackle the approaching missile. They have just 18 minutes to take action and limited information to go off.
‘We see into the halls of power, where highly competent individuals are confronted with confusion, chaos, and helplessness,’ filmmaker Bigelow previously teased to Netflix.
A House of Dynamite plays out from three perspectives, but each conveniently cuts just as the bomb is about to impact Chicago and before the president confirms his retaliation tactics.
The final moments then show a stampede of government workers, including National Security advisers, heading towards a secure bunker in Pennsylvania, while the leader is still weighing up his two options: let the missile hit Chicago or authorise a counterattack, risking a nuclear war.
Situated on the Marine One helicopter, the president reads out a verification code required to launch a missile. However, whether he goes through with the plan will remain a mystery.
While it is confirmed that the missile originated somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, that’s about as specific as the details get, as we’re never told who launched the threat or from which country.
Even lead star Elba, 53, has admitted he has no idea what happens after the movie ends and the credits roll.
‘Unfortunately, it is the sacrifice of having 10million people die versus the entire planet would’ve probably been his decision,’ the Luther actor told Screen Rant.
‘But I don’t know. I don’t know. We didn’t want to know the answer.’
Consequently, viewers have been left somewhat deflated by the less-than-explosive ending… which is perhaps what Bigelow was expecting.
Speaking ahead of its release, she explained: ‘I want audiences to leave theatres thinking, “OK, what do we do now?”‘
‘We really are living in a house of dynamite. I felt it was so important to get that information out there, so we could start a conversation.
‘That’s the explosion we’re interested in. The conversation people have about the film afterward.’
Still, feedback is strong for A House of Dynamite, even if the ending has divided critics and audiences alike.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it sits with a respectable 79% score from reviewers and a close 76% from fans, with many comments heaping praise on the levels of ‘suspense’ and even branding it one of the ‘scariest movies’ of recent times.
