A wave of disappointment has washed over fans of the Stray Cats as the iconic rockabilly band announced the complete cancellation of their highly anticipated US tour.
The heartbreaking news stems from a serious health battle faced by frontman Brian Setzer, the band’s singer and guitarist. Diagnosed earlier this year with an autoimmune disease, Setzer’s condition has tragically rendered him unable to perform.
The tour, slated to begin on Halloween with 21 dates across the country, represented a long-awaited return for the group. Fans were eagerly anticipating a chance to experience the energy of hits like “Stray Cat Strut” and “Rock This Town” live once more.
Setzer, 66, expressed his profound sorrow in a personal message, admitting he was “heartbroken” to deliver the news. He revealed he had been relentlessly pursuing every avenue to make the tour possible, but ultimately, it proved insurmountable.
The illness first manifested last year during a tour, with Setzer experiencing debilitating hand cramps. While not painful, the sensation was described as a numbness, as if “wearing a pair of gloves,” severely impacting his ability to play.
Despite the initial shock, Setzer has shown remarkable resilience, sharing updates on his progress. He celebrated small victories, like regaining the ability to hold a pen and tie his shoes, acknowledging the support of a world-class medical team.
Earlier this year, a glimmer of hope emerged as Setzer reported feeling better each day, even expressing optimism about returning to the stage for his annual Christmas show. A video posted on his birthday showed him joyfully singing and playing guitar, a moment he described as something he deeply missed.
The Stray Cats, formed in 1979, left an indelible mark on rock music. Their signature sound and energetic performances ignited a rockabilly revival, influencing countless artists and earning them a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the enduring anthem, “Rock This Town.”
While refunds will be issued to ticket holders, the cancellation leaves a void for fans and a somber note for a band that has consistently delivered electrifying performances for decades. The focus now shifts to Setzer’s recovery and the hope for a future return to the music he loves.
