Jessie J has revealed this year has fundamentally reshaped her life, following a deeply personal battle with breast cancer. The singer, 37, publicly shared her diagnosis of ‘early breast cancer’ earlier this year, a revelation that prompted a period of retreat for a necessary mastectomy.
Returning to the stage at the Music Industry Trust Awards in London, Jessie J spoke with raw honesty to the audience. She acknowledged the universal struggles everyone carries, the burdens we navigate between work and personal life, and the profound impact of facing mortality.
“This year has changed my whole world,” she confessed, her voice resonating with newfound perspective. “My perspective, what battles I’m going to pick… when death comes knocking at your door, and you kind of have to answer and f*ing kick it away, it just changes everything.”
The evening wasn’t solely about reflection; Jessie J delivered a powerful performance, captivating the audience with a string of her beloved hits. This appearance followed a period of frustration, as a scheduled follow-up surgery was unexpectedly postponed due to unforeseen complexities.

Her early diagnosis of DCIS allowed her to avoid chemotherapy and radiation, but the size of the tumor – 5cm – necessitated a full mastectomy. While receiving a positive prognosis in August, Jessie J emphasized the ongoing need for healing and a further surgical intervention.
Jessie J expressed gratitude for the early detection, acknowledging that while cancer is a formidable opponent, early intervention offered a significant advantage. Her first performance after publicly sharing her diagnosis was a poignant moment at BBC Radio 2 in the Park in September.
“Eleven weeks ago, I had surgery and at the last show I played, I didn’t know what was coming next,” she shared with the crowd, her voice filled with emotion. “I’m still recovering, but I’m just so thankful to be here.”
