A father in Arizona, haunted by the consequences of a horrific act, has died just weeks before he was to be sentenced for the death of his two-year-old daughter. Christopher Scholtes, 38, was discovered deceased in his home Wednesday morning, hours before he was scheduled to surrender himself to authorities.
The tragedy unfolded on a scorching July afternoon when Scholtes left his youngest child alone in a car while he indulged in video games and online searches. His wife, Erika, a hospital anesthesiologist, arrived home to a nightmare – finding her daughter unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle.
Despite frantic efforts, the little girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. The temperature within the car had soared to a deadly 109 degrees Fahrenheit, turning the vehicle into an oven. A mother’s desperate plea echoed in text messages revealed later: “I told you to stop leaving them in the car. How many times have I told you,” sent as their daughter was rushed to the emergency room.
Scholtes’ response was a chilling admission of guilt: “Baby I’m sorry,” followed by a devastating realization, “How could I do this. I killed our baby, this can’t be real.” Court records painted a disturbing picture of a pattern – the father “regularly” left his children unattended in the car.
Facing a potential sentence of 20 to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty last month, Scholtes ultimately chose a different path. The possibility of a life sentence, or even the death penalty had the case gone to trial, loomed over him.
Authorities confirmed Scholtes’ death, indicating the investigation suggests he took his own life. The loss leaves behind a grieving wife and two other children, forever marked by this unspeakable tragedy.
The Pima County Attorney’s Office expressed profound sorrow, emphasizing that while justice was delayed, the pursuit of truth and accountability would continue. The little girl’s memory, they vowed, would not be silenced.
