A desperate search is underway off the rugged coast of Ireland for a Royal Navy sailor who vanished overnight. The alarm was raised early this morning when a UK naval support vessel reported one of its crew missing, sparking a massive multi-agency response.
The last confirmed sighting of the sailor was around 10:30 PM the previous night, leaving a growing sense of urgency as hours tick by. The vessel was positioned north of the remote Tory Island when the distress call reached the Irish Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Malin Head.
The search zone stretches across a challenging stretch of the northwest coast, between the wild beauty of Tory Island in County Donegal and the stark landscape of Eagle Island in County Mayo. Conditions are demanding, adding to the complexity of the operation.
An extensive aerial search is being conducted, utilizing the full capabilities of Ireland’s Coast Guard. Rescue 120F, a fixed-wing aircraft based in Shannon, and helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo are meticulously scanning the waves, alongside a CASA 284 plane from the Irish Air Corps.
The search at sea is equally comprehensive, with the UK naval support vessel actively participating alongside three RNLI all-weather lifeboats. Crews from Ballyglass, Arranmore Island, and Lough Swilly are battling the elements, determined to locate the missing sailor.
Beyond the dedicated search teams, other vessels in the area are lending their support, joining the effort to cover as much ground as possible. Every available resource is being deployed in this critical operation.
