NIGERIA NIGHTMARE: Girl Survives—24 Still Missing!

NIGERIA NIGHTMARE: Girl Survives—24 Still Missing!

A wave of relief washed over Kebbi State, Nigeria, as one of the schoolgirls abducted from her dormitory was confirmed safe, having bravely escaped her captors. The young student arrived home late Monday, hours after a terrifying raid on the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the northwestern region.

Principal Musa Rabi Magaji delivered the hopeful news, adding that another student, initially unaccounted for, also managed to flee the attack in its immediate aftermath. Both girls are now reunited with their families, physically unharmed but undoubtedly shaken by the ordeal.

The escape offers a glimmer of hope amidst a desperate search for the remaining 24 girls seized before dawn on Monday. The attack was brutal, claiming the life of a dedicated member of the school staff and plunging the community into fear.

Amina Hassan, standing, wife of the vice principal of the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, where gunmen on Monday attacked the school dormitory, abducted schoolgirls and killed her husband, with mourners, in Kebbi, Nigeria, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025.

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, swiftly visited the school, issuing a stark directive to soldiers: launch an all-out, intelligence-led operation to locate and rescue the missing students. His message was unequivocal – success is the only acceptable outcome.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the abduction, suspicion falls on the numerous armed gangs plaguing the region. These groups frequently target schools, travelers, and vulnerable villages, demanding ransoms for their captives.

The perpetrators are believed to be largely former herders, driven to armed conflict by escalating disputes over dwindling resources with farming communities. This complex dynamic fuels a cycle of violence and insecurity across northern Nigeria.

Mass school kidnappings have become a grim reality in this part of the country, perpetrated by a mix of nomadic gangs and, increasingly, extremist groups. Targeting schools is a calculated tactic, designed to maximize attention and amplify their demands.

Underlying this crisis is a web of systemic issues, including widespread corruption that hampers security forces, a lack of accountability for attackers, and the easy flow of weapons across porous borders. These factors create a breeding ground for instability.

Security analyst Oluwole Ojewale of the Institute for Security Studies points to a disturbing trend: kidnappings of school children garner far more attention than other abductions. This “strategic kidnapping” exploits the emotional weight of the crime to exert maximum pressure on authorities.
