KLIMT MASTERPIECE SHATTERS RECORDS: $236.4 MILLION!

KLIMT MASTERPIECE SHATTERS RECORDS: $236.4 MILLION!

A young woman, regal in an imperial Chinese robe, gazes out from the canvas, a silent witness to history. Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” has ascended to a new echelon of artistic significance, becoming the most expensive modern work ever sold at auction.

The painting, a striking 71-by-51 inches, commanded a breathtaking $236.4 million, including fees, during a Sotheby’s auction in New York. It was a final offering from the esteemed private collection of Leonard Lauder, the cosmetics magnate who recently passed away.

The auction room crackled with anticipation as a fierce, 19-minute bidding war unfolded. Two determined collectors, connected by phone through their representatives, battled for ownership of this masterpiece, pushing the price far beyond the initial $150 million estimate.

A wave of excitement rippled through the audience as the price surged past $200 million. Auctioneer Oliver Barker, sensing the moment, urged one bidder to consider the rarity of the opportunity. “Take your time,” he encouraged, “It’s worth it.”

The tension was palpable as a representative conferred with their client, a silent exchange that held the fate of the painting in the balance. Barker, with mounting enthusiasm, declared, “Don’t think this one comes up again.”

A raised hand signaled a renewed bid of $202 million, followed swiftly by a counteroffer of $205 million from a second bidder. The room held its breath as one representative made a decisive gesture, ending the call and laying down the phone.

“That’s the sure sign,” Barker announced, a knowing smile playing on his lips. He raised the hammer, sealing the fate of the portrait and cementing its place in art history.

While extraordinary, the price falls just shy of the all-time auction record held by Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi,” which sold for $450.3 million in 2017. Nevertheless, “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” stands as a monumental achievement in the art market.

Commissioned between 1914 and 1916, the portrait captures Elisabeth Lederer, daughter of Klimt’s patrons, Serena and August Lederer. Art historian Robert Wellington notes the work embodies Klimt’s mature style, a masterful interplay of shape and color that draws the viewer into an otherworldly vision.

Elisabeth is depicted adorned in a delicate, translucent Chinese-style robe, set against a backdrop that echoes the orientalist theme with intricate chinoiserie figures and landscapes. The composition is a testament to Klimt’s ability to create a captivating aesthetic sphere.

The painting’s history is marked by resilience. Confiscated by the Nazis during World War II, it remarkably survived, unlike other Klimt works from the Lederer family’s collection, which were tragically lost in a fire.

For the past four decades, “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” resided within Leonard Lauder’s private collection, a hidden gem awaiting its moment in the spotlight.

Klimt, a central figure in the Austrian art nouveau movement, is celebrated for iconic works like “The Kiss.” His paintings consistently command impressive prices; “Lady With a Fan” sold for $108.4 million in 2023, a record for European auction sales at the time.

Wellington explains the enduring appeal of Klimt’s work, noting its revered beauty, decorative quality, and exceptional rarity. With only two such portraits remaining in private hands, “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” represented a truly unique prize for collectors.
