Israel ACCUSED of GENOCIDE Using Coiner’s Legacy – Family OUTRAGED!

Israel ACCUSED of GENOCIDE Using Coiner’s Legacy – Family OUTRAGED!

The very word “genocide” carries the weight of unimaginable horror, born from the systematic destruction of European Jewry during World War II. It was Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jewish jurist, who gave this atrocity a name, dedicating his life to preventing its recurrence and inspiring the 1948 U.N. Genocide Convention.

Now, his family is fighting to protect his legacy. A growing chorus of concern, led by Joseph Lemkin – Raphael’s nephew – is challenging the actions of the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, an organization they believe is twisting his life’s work into something unrecognizable.

The catalyst? The Institute’s “Active Genocide Alert” issued just days after the brutal Hamas attacks on Israel. This alert accused Israel of committing genocide, a claim the family views as a profound betrayal of Raphael Lemkin’s principles and a dangerous inversion of his mission.

Joseph Lemkin initially hoped the Institute would remain obscure, but his concern escalated when his sixteen-year-old son questioned the organization’s claims circulating on social media. He realized the potential impact on a new generation, and the need to publicly defend his uncle’s name.

He wasn’t alone in his alarm. A coalition of prominent U.S. rabbis has joined the call for Pennsylvania officials to review the Institute’s use of the Lemkin name, arguing it misleads the public and distorts historical truth.

Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, emphasized the duty to defend historical accuracy when an organization misuses a revered figure’s name. Rabbi Aryeh Ralbag, Chief Justice of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, echoed this sentiment, condemning the label of “genocide” applied to Israel as a distortion.

The family and the rabbis believe the Institute’s actions aren’t simply a matter of historical inaccuracy; they are fueling a dangerous rise in antisemitism. Evidence suggests a direct correlation between accusations of genocide against Israel and surges in antisemitic incidents within the United States.

“Using the ‘genocide’ trope against Israel doesn’t advance peace or justice – it just brings back antisemitic patterns,” Joseph Lemkin stated. “It turns the memory of Jewish victimhood into an accusation against the Jewish People.”

The concern extends beyond the immediate accusations. Lemkin warns that increasingly mainstream anti-Zionist rhetoric, now echoing in legislative chambers and political rallies, is deeply troubling and poses a risk to Jewish communities. He accepts criticism of Israeli policy, but vehemently rejects attempts to delegitimize Israel’s very existence.

Raphael Lemkin dedicated his life to protecting all people, especially understanding the Jewish people’s right to safety and self-determination. His nephew believes he would be “truly pained” to see his name used to distort his mission, and that honoring his memory requires rejecting rhetoric that twists his legacy into a weapon of hate.

The family’s plea is simple: to uphold the moral clarity of Raphael Lemkin’s vision, to call out genuine injustice, and to defend the truth against those who seek to corrupt it.
