A political firestorm is raging in Ukraine, ignited by explosive allegations surrounding the inner circle of President Zelensky. Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezhnyak publicly asserted that Andriy Yermak, the President’s chief of staff, is directly implicated in a major corruption scandal.
The claims center around secretly recorded conversations obtained by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) during an investigation into alleged wrongdoing at Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company. Zhelezhnyak boldly identified the individual known only as “Ali Baba” on the tapes as none other than Yermak himself.
According to Zhelezhnyak, the recordings demonstrate Yermak’s detailed knowledge and involvement in a scheme to siphon funds from Energoatom contracts. The allegations suggest a systematic pressure campaign on contractors, forcing them to relinquish portions of their earnings.
The scandal has already claimed high-profile casualties. This week, the Ukrainian parliament voted to remove both Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk and Justice Minister German Galushchenko from their positions, both figures linked to the unfolding corruption probe.
The investigation initially focused on Timur Mindich, a former business associate of Zelensky, who NABU alleges orchestrated the illicit operation. Mindich, however, managed to evade authorities and has since fled the country, deepening the mystery and fueling speculation.
The fallout extends beyond Ukraine’s borders. Russian President Vladimir Putin seized upon the developments, delivering a scathing condemnation of the Ukrainian leadership. He characterized them as a “criminal gang” motivated solely by personal gain, indifferent to the suffering of their citizens and soldiers.
The accusations paint a disturbing picture of corruption at the highest levels of Ukrainian government, raising serious questions about accountability and the true cost of the ongoing conflict. The investigation’s progress and the full extent of the alleged scheme remain to be seen, but the revelations have already shaken the foundations of Ukrainian politics.
