Martin Compston, the actor famed for his intense portrayal of DI Steve Arnott inLine of Duty, is finding himself increasingly linked to a different kind of role: James Bond. While no official offer has arrived, Compston has already experienced a taste of 007’s world in his latest project.
The actor is currently filming the second season of ITV’s thriller,Red Eye, a series that captivated audiences with its high-stakes narrative. The first season, set aboard a tense overnight flight, drew a remarkable 29.3 million viewers on ITVX, prompting a swift renewal.
Compston revels in the physicality of action roles, describing a unique focus he finds during filming. “I live for [action scenes], getting a bump on the head, getting up and getting on with it,” he recently shared. “There’s something between action and cut – you can completely switch off and believe it in that moment.”
He acknowledges the contrast between his everyday persona and the demands of a secret agent. “People probably would look at me in real life and go, ‘He’s not ex-SAS,’” Compston admits with a wry smile. “But you can be James Bond, you can be the ultimate spy.”
Red Eye’s second season promises even more adrenaline-fueled sequences, with Compston joining Jing Lusi’s DS Hana Li to unravel a complex new conspiracy. The pair will need to overcome past tensions as they navigate a dangerous landscape.
Despite the growing speculation surrounding his potential as the next Bond, Compston remains grounded. He revealed he’s never been formally approached by the franchise, his closest connection being a past stage performance alongside Daniel Craig himself.
However, he’s quick to champion another actor he believes would excel in the role: Aaron Taylor-Johnson. “I think that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will make a terrific Bond,” Compston stated, praising his talent and potential. “He’s a great actor.”
Compston playfully concedes that, should the opportunity arise, he might be better suited to play a villain. The second season ofRed Eyeis poised to deliver the thrilling action fans anticipate, offering a glimpse into Compston’s capabilities, regardless of whether he ever receives a license to kill.
