HERO'S LAST GIFT: Guard Gave His Life So Others Could Have Thanksgiving.

HERO'S LAST GIFT: Guard Gave His Life So Others Could Have Thanksgiving.

A selfless act of service turned into a nightmare on Thanksgiving Day in Washington D.C. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard, was critically wounded in a sudden, brutal ambush just blocks from the White House.

Beckstrom hadn’t been assigned the Thanksgiving duty; she volunteered. Her intention was simple and profoundly generous: to allow her fellow guardsmen and women to spend the holiday with their families. She willingly took their shift, a sacrifice now overshadowed by unimaginable tragedy.

Her father, Gary, sits vigil at her bedside, holding her hand. His words are a heartbreaking testament to the severity of her injuries. He described her wound as “mortal,” acknowledging that recovery is not expected.

The attack unfolded around 2:15 p.m. near Farragut Square. Sarah and her colleague, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, were on routine patrol when they were ambushed without warning by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national.

Both Beckstrom and Wolfe had only been sworn in less than 24 hours before the shooting, their commitment to service tragically cut short. The weight of this new responsibility, the promise of protecting others, now rests heavy with grief.

Lakanwal, who arrived in the United States during the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal under Operation Allies Welcome, drove across the country from Washington state to carry out the attack. He used a .350 Smith & Wesson revolver, meticulously planning an act of violence.

Authorities have taken Lakanwal into custody, and he currently faces charges including assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a crime. These charges could be significantly escalated should either of the wounded guardsmen succumb to their injuries.

The incident has prompted a swift response, including a call for a comprehensive review of the vetting processes used for Afghan refugees who arrived in 2021. Immigration from Afghanistan has been temporarily halted as security protocols are reassessed.

Beyond the legal and political ramifications, the core of this tragedy lies in the selfless dedication of a young woman who chose to serve others on a day meant for family and gratitude. Sarah Beckstrom’s sacrifice embodies the true spirit of service, a spirit now dimmed by senseless violence.
