DISABLED SWIMMERS EXPLODE: Inclusivity Wave Sweeps the Nation!

DISABLED SWIMMERS EXPLODE: Inclusivity Wave Sweeps the Nation!

A remarkable surge is transforming swimming lessons across Scotland. New data reveals a 69% increase in children with disabilities participating in the Learn to Swim Framework – a national initiative reaching nearly 82,000 young swimmers.

This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about a fundamental shift in how inclusivity is approached. An impressive 81% of these young swimmers with disabilities are now thriving in mainstream classes, learning alongside their peers.

The Learn to Swim Framework, delivered through a network of 38 leisure trusts and over 160 pools, envisions a “Generation Swim” – a future where every child feels confident and safe in the water, reaping the profound health and social benefits that swimming provides.

69% rise in swimmers with a disability marks major leap for inclusion

This progress coincides with the annual #SeeMyAbility campaign, a powerful movement dedicated to dismantling barriers and championing the message that swimming truly is for everyone.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see more children with disabilities learning and growing alongside their friends,” explains Paul Wilson, Disability Performance Development Manager. “The increasing ability of teachers to adapt and support diverse needs is a testament to how far we’ve come.”

The framework’s commitment to accessibility extends to all ages and abilities, fostering a supportive environment where every individual can flourish.

Paralympian Toni Shaw embodies this spirit. Starting her swimming journey at just one year old through the Learn to Swim Framework in Aberdeen, she overcame the challenge of being born without a right hand to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.

“Being in a mainstream club was vital for me,” Shaw shares. “My parents put me in a regular class, and that’s where my love for swimming began. It’s so important to show that a disability doesn’t limit you – you can absolutely thrive in a mainstream environment.”

The ‘See My Ability’ campaign, launched in 2019, actively encourages lesson providers to create optimal learning environments, adapting lessons when necessary to ensure every child can progress and reach their full potential.

Peter Farrer, Chief Operating Officer at Scottish Water, emphasizes the critical importance of water safety in a nation surrounded by lochs, rivers, and coastline. “Providing access to swimming lessons for all abilities isn’t just about safety; it’s about unlocking the wider health, social, and fitness benefits that swimming offers.”

This success is a powerful example of collaborative effort, with the Scottish Swimming-Scottish Water Framework providing essential resources, training, and guidance to empower teachers and foster a truly inclusive learning experience.
