HEARTBREAK ON SCREEN: This Christmas Film Will SHATTER You (But Heal You Too)

The festive season often arrives with a flurry of Christmas advertisements, brands vying for attention and a place in our hearts. But amidst the commercialism, some adverts resonate on a profoundly deeper level, carrying messages of genuine human connection and empathy.

This year, the baby loss charity Sands has released a film, “I’ll Never Forget You,” a poignant and deeply moving story designed to reach those who understand the isolating pain of losing a child, reminding them they are not alone.

The film’s director, Phil Beastall, previously captivated audiences with his 2018 Christmas advert, lauded by many as surpassing even the renowned John Lewis campaigns. Having collaborated with Sands before on a Lewis Capaldi music video, Phil aimed to capture the emotional weight of navigating Christmas both before and after unimaginable loss.

“I hope this film offers a reflection for those experiencing loss, a reassurance that support exists,” Phil explained. “In those incredibly difficult moments, knowing you’re not isolated, that there’s a community to lean on, can bring a small measure of comfort.”

The film opens with a stark and heartbreaking scene: a couple returning home for Christmas after suffering the loss of their baby. Strikingly, the scene unfolds in complete silence, amplifying the raw emotion. The woman, overwhelmed with grief, collapses as they enter, her eyes falling upon the Christmas tree.

Her partner embraces her, their shared sorrow palpable. The camera lingers on an empty baby carrier and a tiny stocking, bearing the name “Julia May,” hanging above the fireplace – a devastatingly intimate detail.

As they begin to navigate their grief, the man researches Sands, seeking connection and understanding. They eventually find themselves among others who share their pain, gathered around a tree adorned with ornaments commemorating lost babies.

The film beautifully portrays the long journey of grief, showing moments of quiet remembrance alongside newfound sources of joy. We see the woman finding solace in yoga with a friend, and the man joining the Sands United football team, a symbol of community and healing.

A rediscovered babygro, bearing Julia May’s name, triggers a wave of emotion. Later, a simple moment – watching a mother and daughter on a swing – brings a poignant awareness of what might have been. A lovingly crafted memory box, filled with cherished items, offers a tangible expression of enduring love.

“Baby loss remains a taboo subject,” explains Carolyn Bray, assistant director of income and supporter engagement at Sands. “People struggle to talk about it, often feeling uncomfortable or unsure what to say. We hope this film will open up that conversation.”

The film’s power lies in its unflinching honesty. Phil intentionally removed music from the opening scene, wanting the audience to experience the couple’s pain directly. “I wanted their performance to be the only thing we experience,” he said. “To make it as hard-hitting as possible, to help people truly feel it with the characters.”

Despite the sadness, Phil emphasizes the importance of hope. “Every film I make ends with a message of hope,” he stated. “Even in the darkest times, there’s still light to be found.” He deliberately kept his costs minimal, prioritizing impact over profit, driven by a deep commitment to the cause.

Carolyn praised Phil’s ability to portray grief with such sensitivity and authenticity, noting that the actors’ performances felt incredibly real. She shared her own personal connection to the subject, expressing her pride in the film and her hope that it will encourage others to seek support.

Every day in the UK, thirteen babies die shortly before, during, or soon after birth, and at least one in six pregnancies end in miscarriage. Sands provides vital support to families navigating these heartbreaking losses, and this film serves as a powerful reminder that no one should have to grieve alone.

The film concludes with a scene of shared connection – the couple joined by other bereaved parents for a Christmas meal, holding hands and offering each other silent support as Cam Monroe’s song, “I’ll Never Forget You,” gently fades. It’s a testament to the enduring power of community and the unwavering hope for healing.
