The Christmas music charts are bracing for an unexpected contender. A familiar, pink-snouted force has entered the race for the coveted Christmas number one spot: Peppa Pig.
The announcement came during a live broadcast on Good Morning Britain, interrupting the usual schedule with “urgent news from Peppaland.” Entertainment Editor Richard Arnold hinted at a festive surprise, building anticipation for the nation’s favorite pig.
Peppa herself teased the reveal, promising a “Christmas classic” before the unveiling of her ambitious project: a fresh take on Wham!’s iconic 1984 hit, “Last Christmas.”
This isn’t a simple cover, however. The song is deeply personal, celebrating the first Christmas with Peppa’s new baby sister, Evie, born earlier this year. The lyrics have been cleverly adapted to reflect this joyous occasion.
The updated lyrics include a heartwarming verse: “Last Christmas was great from the start, and the very best day in every way / This year, now Evie is here, it’s gonna be extra special.” It’s a clear signal that Peppa intends to compete seriously.
Peppa’s entry immediately sets up a head-to-head battle with the Caregivers Choir, who are releasing a cover of Robbie Williams’ beloved ballad, “Angels.” The chart showdown is already being compared to the cinematic clash between “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
This isn’t Peppa’s first attempt at chart domination. In 2019, she boldly declared her intention to “steal” the Christmas number one from Robbie Williams with an original song, “Bing Bong Christmas.”
While that earlier bid ultimately fell short – Peppa graciously stepped aside to allow LadBaby’s “I Love Sausage Rolls” to claim the top spot – her competitive spirit remains undimmed. LadBaby’s retirement from the Christmas song arena has opened the door for Peppa’s renewed ambition.
The current contenders vying for the top spot include Mariah Carey’s perennial favorite, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” alongside tracks from Alison Limerick, Taylor Swift, and Huntrx/KPop Demon Hunters, creating a diverse and exciting musical landscape.
Some fans hope that acknowledging Peppa’s festive offering might encourage her to refrain from future bids, allowing other artists a chance at chart glory. But for now, the race is on, and the Christmas number one remains delightfully unpredictable.
