The quiet of a May morning in Halton Hills was shattered when a speeding vehicle caught the attention of a Halton Regional Police officer. It was approximately 1:30 a.m. on Trafalgar Road, and the car was moving at a dangerous velocity, instantly raising suspicion.
A traffic stop near the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Hornby Road revealed three occupants inside the vehicle. Routine procedure dictated a search, guided by the Cannabis Control Act, but what unfolded next was far from routine.
Hidden within a bag, officers discovered a loaded .40 caliber handgun, containing eight rounds of ammunition. The discovery immediately escalated the situation from a traffic violation to a serious criminal investigation.
Justice Warner-Johnson, 26, of Pickering, Kye-Shawne Griffiths, 26, of Brampton, and Amy Lovsin, 26, of Toronto, were each subsequently charged with seven offenses. These included unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing it in a vehicle, knowing possession was unlawful, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Further charges encompassed possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, careless use of a firearm, and possession of a prohibited weapon. The weight of these accusations signaled a potentially significant case for the Halton Regional Police.
However, a dramatic turn occurred on April 22, 2024. At the request of the Crown, all charges against Amy Lovsin were withdrawn, leaving questions surrounding the circumstances of the initial arrest and subsequent investigation.
Investigators continue to seek information related to this case and encourage anyone with relevant details to contact the 1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2416. The investigation remains active, even with the charges against one individual dropped.
