BEAR MANIA OVER! Coastal Chaos Resolved – No Children Harmed!

A wave of relief washed over the community of Bella Coola as conservation officers announced the four grizzly bears captured this week were not responsible for the terrifying attack on schoolchildren. The news, delivered Friday, came after painstaking forensic analysis, including detailed DNA examination, definitively cleared the animals.

The attack, a harrowing ordeal for students and staff from Acwsalcta School, left four individuals – three children and one adult – with serious injuries. All were immediately airlifted to Vancouver for specialized medical care, and their condition remains closely guarded.

Despite the exoneration of these four bears, the investigation remains active and focused on identifying the animal responsible for the brutal assault. Conservation officers are urging residents to exercise extreme caution, specifically avoiding the 4 Mile area and refraining from any independent searches for bears.

The captured grizzlies, deemed healthy by wildlife biologists and the provincial veterinarian, will soon be relocated. They will be carefully moved to a remote section within their established home range, ensuring they are safely distanced from the community.

This incident underscores a growing concern about human-wildlife conflict in the Bella Coola region. The Ministry of Environment reports a significant increase in bear-related calls this year, with 24 reported incidents, a startling 18 of which occurred within the last three months.

The Nuxalk Nation’s elected Chief Samuel Schooner has appealed for support for the affected families, directing those wishing to help towards a fundraising effort established to assist with their recovery. The community now focuses on healing and ensuring future safety in the face of this unsettling event.

Conservation officers are maintaining a heightened presence in the area, diligently monitoring bear activity to prevent further incidents and restore a sense of security to the residents of Bella Coola. The search for the bear involved in the attack continues with unwavering determination.
